Usborne Phonics Readers are lively and amusing stories with adorable illustrations by Stephen Cartwright that complement the text. Fold-out pages add to the enjoyment and involvement of the child.
Usborne Phonics Readers have been created in consultation with a language expert, taking into account the latest research on the most effective ways of teaching reading.
Phonics-based reading involves learning to recognize the distinct sounds, or phonemes, that go together to make up words. Some phonemes correspond to a single letter, like the f-o-x sounds in the word "fox", and others to combinations of letters, such as sh-ar-k in the word "shark".

Parent reviews of Usborne Phonics Readers:
"This book (Big Pig On A Dig), along with others in the series, concentrates on the phonics aspect of the make up of words. Both my kids have loved this book, it has taught them how to construct words as well as how to decide what a word is, while following a very funny story at the same time. I have to admit that I'm very fond of the book too - a great fun way to learn words. The only problem now is that they want another book just the same! Luckily there are a number of other books in the series. Highly recommended." ~ Katie, Grove City, PA "The phonics in this book (Sam Sheep Can't Sleep) are fantastic! Almost every word in it can be sounded out. It has a nice musical rhythmn when reading it out loud. The flaps make it interesting for younger children and the illustrations are comical. It's fun to read." ~ Carilyn, Chicago, IL
